First of all I'd like to say I'm excited for our Ask the Expert page on this web site. I will be coordinating it but will get answers from different diabetes
I myself am a certified diabetes educator and registered dietitian with a BS in Medical Dietetics from BYU and a Masters from USU (research on diabetes nutritional care and education). I've done diabetes care and education for 35 years. I have a small Diabetes Self-management Training company, Real Life Diabetes, LLC, and work in diabetes education at the Birch Family Pharmacy in Tooele. I will have had Type 1 Diabetes for 50 years on 12/2/2014, so far without complications. I've been able to do everything my parents and I were told I wouldn't be able to do with diabetes, including having 5 children and, now, 11 grandchildren. I'm married to Wayne DeLeeuw who has been very supportive of my diabetes efforts and interests, to the point of developing Type 2 himself! I try to advocate for persons with and at risk for diabetes developing their own approach to self-management. And I believe that any of the old style dietitians who make it to heaven will be standing in a long line apologizing to former “patients” for the rigid and inflexible approaches to diabetes treatment of the past! I am finally able to admit I have experienced a lot of "history" and to celebrates the many advances in diabetes treatment and self-management I've seen and hope yet to see.
